These domain names can be personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other labels people are popular by. At first, just 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you desired to secure john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already acquired 3rd-level names remained running.
